New York State Assemblymen from Brooklyn Dov Hikind will reintroduce a bill he originally introduced in 2005 to make ethnic screening or racial profiling a “legal tool” in the law enforcement “tool box”. His earlier bill did not make it to the assembly floor due to political correctness. Rational thinking has been suspended in favor of putting us at risk of the radical elements of the Islamic religion.
While we have had one major terrorist attack in the United States that was not attributed to radical Islam, in Oklahoma City, the vast majority of terrorist assaults and murders have been by persons who would have been stopped if racial or ethnic profiling had been in effect. In response to Assemblymen Hikind’s bill, Omar Chaundy of the Islamic Center of Long Island is quoted by asking “at what cost?”, “ and at what tangible gain?” Chaundy claims “It creates more harm than good. It creates a false sense of security. And also it puts blanket suspicious on people based on ethnic background”.
Including the 9/11 hijackers, 48 foreign-born militant Islamic terrorists have been charged, been convicted, pled guilty, or admitted to involvement in terrorism within the United States since 1993. Almost all of these individuals are now thought to be linked to Osama bin Laden’s al Qaeda organization. This study focuses on militant Islamic terrorists because the threat they pose dwarfs that from any other terrorists, foreign or domestic. (For details on the dozens of Islamic terrorists involved in terrorism within US borders see: http://www.cis.org/911-HowMilitantIslamicTerroristsEntered )
In addition to 9/11, some of the plots examined in the study include the murder of employees outside of CIA headquarters, the first attack on the World Trade Center, a plot to bomb the subway in Brooklyn, plots to bomb New York City landmarks, and the Millennium plot to bomb Los Angeles International Airport.)
I would like to give my answers to Chaundy's quotes in this report and I hope that those that read this commentary will agree with me.
I have for many years objected to the “popular” belief that racial or ethnic profiling is a “very bad thing!" In fact I am of the opinion that it is a very good thing and something that makes mathematical sense and common sense. If you want to catch a person who fits a certain profile, say a young Moslem radicals from Middle Eastern, African, Asian why would you put all the other people through the same scrutiny with limited resources if you want to economically ensure the safety of the majority of the people?
This focus of security assets makes the most sense and if people in that group think that is unfair then they should make stronger efforts to rid the radicals from their midst and take more responsibility for the dangers we all must face.
I would welcome much more vocal and hands on support from the Omar Chaundys of the nation and world when comes renouncing the acts of those members of his religion or ethnic background that are killing innocent people daily.
It is past time for everyone who has a brain to stand up and say YES Profiling makes perfect sense.
Thanks,
Bruce
